Who is my liaison to God?

For many people who grew up in the church, the perception can easily be, that your pastor is your liaison to God. The Catholics may indicate their priest and Pope serve as their liaison. The Muslims may point to the prophets who spoke directly to Allah. In every religion you see a group of people turn toward a few for divine direction. Why?

Let me ask a question. We read in the Old Testament about prophets who had unique relationships with God. This seemed to be at a time, prior to the coming of Christ, or the Holy Spirit. The prophets seemed to be the only ones who heard God. They would then, offer His message to the people and hopefully, change would take place.

If God is no respecter of persons, as evidenced in Romans 2:11 then, why could only certain people hear Him? What is unique or special about them, that only they can hear His Word?

They loved Him. They absolutely loved Him. It was the one and only thing that set any bible character apart from anyone and everyone else in the bible.

Enoch, Moses, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, all the way to David and beyond. You see the same narrative. The Lord was with him. Why, because he walked with the Lord.

When I say that these particular people loved Him, I also want to show you that they DEMONSTRATED this love. They spent time with Him.

How does one spend time with God?

  • CONSISTENT Praise

  • CONSISTENT Prayer

  • Fasting

  • CONSISTENT Intercession for others

  • CONSISTENT Earnest seeking of His Will, Word, & Purpose for your life

  • *Simple CONSISTENT Conversation

Erin, what do you mean by simple conversation? Now, I know that you many want to have the "What is the meaning of life?" conversation with the creator of the universe, but if He is someone you have a relationship with, then He would enjoy your simple conversations as well.

Who is to say, that God doesn't want to hear your ideas? Why not ask God what to cook for dinner, tonight? You never know what He inspires you to make? Looking for a word to use? Ask God? Who is better at words than He is?

My point is, a relationship built requires time. It requires love. It requires intention and attention. That is what the prophets had, that separated them from the rest of the nations discussed in the bible.

We see in Exodus 19:6 God tells Moses to tell Israel, "You shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation." Notice, that God's intention here was for EVERYONE to be His priest. Not a few. Now, for anyone who is familiar with their bible, answer this question.

Out of the 12 tribes of Israel, how many of them became the priests as God requested? The answer? One tribe, the Levites, were tasked (after the order of Aaron) to become the priests. This means only 1/12th established a relationship with God and the Levites became their liaisons. THIS WAS NOT GOD'S INITIAL INTENTION. It was man's.

Christ came and fulfilled the law in order for us to be indwelled with The Holy Spirit. This was in order for us to become living stones built into a spiritual house to personify the priesthood that God had always intended from us. What do we do with this sacred gift? We are still looking to someone else to be our liaison to the Most High.

Your pastor, priest, Pope, or prophet, is not your liaison to God. YOU are your liaison to God. They are to serve as your mentor to help you mature spiritually. YOU are responsible for establishing your own personal relationship with God, so you can hear Him for yourself. If nothing else, The Holy Spirit within you, serves as your liaison to God.

Your pastor, priest, minister, man of the cloth, has these wonderful revelations because he seeks them. He spends time in the word. He spends time with God. While you may not have a ministry like his, you do have a ministry. WE ALL DO! ALL OF US. God wants to use ALL OF US.

What does He want me to do, you ask? Establish a relationship with him, build it and nourish it, and you'll be sure to find out. Use your spiritual leaders as mentors. Don't rely on the Deacon to read the bible to you. Don't rely on the choir to worship God for you. Don't rely on the Pastor to give you the revelation of God's word. They are working in their ministry to assist in strengthening yours. SEEK GOD for YOURSELF.

When we seek God for ourselves, we are less likely to be lied to. We are less likely to be manipulated. Don't regurgitate verses. Read them. Study and show yourself approved. Visit different churches to expand upon your studies and experiences with God. He will put you on the journey to meet different people who can enhance your journey greatly. Be proactive in your relationship with Him, just as you would a very close friend. The closest friends we have, are the ones we talk to and interact with often.

Who is your liaison to God? You have none! You simply have people in your life to assist in enhancing your spiritual experience and maturity. They are there to mentor you to your highest good. Start your own relationship today!
